When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Newborn Session?

One of the most common questions I receive as a newborn photographer is: “When should I book my baby’s session?” The answer depends on the type of session you want—but if you’re hoping to capture those dreamy, curled-up, sleepy newborn photos, timing matters more than you might think.

The Sweet Spot: 5–14 Days Old

The ideal window for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are still very sleepy, naturally curled up, and more easily soothed—making it possible to capture peaceful, posed images that showcase just how small and delicate they truly are.

Why This Timing Works Best

  • Sleepy + Snuggly: Babies sleep longer and deeper in those first days, which helps us safely pose and photograph them without disrupting their comfort.

  • Natural Flexibility: Their little bodies are still used to being curled up in the womb, which allows for those heart-melting, tucked-in poses.

  • Fewer Disruptions: Baby acne, colic, and growth spurts often start to appear around week 3 or later.

When to Book Your Session

Because that early window passes quickly, I recommend booking your newborn session before your baby arrives—typically during your second or early third trimester.

Once your due date is on my calendar, I reserve space in my schedule to photograph your baby during that perfect time frame, adjusting the session date once they make their arrival.

Can I Still Book After 2 Weeks?

Absolutely! While the style of the session may shift slightly—baby will likely be more alert and less curled—we can still create beautiful, meaningful images. We’ll focus on cozy wraps, eye contact, family cuddles, and natural connection. Every age is worth capturing.
